02may2:00 pm4:00 pmmatt focklerWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Around Matt Fockler’s hometown of Montrose, South Dakota, he specializes in dry-stack stone, mosaic tile, and other building projects that require an artist’s touch.

Matt’s other art is lesser known, outside of a few people who have been lucky enough to hear him sing around a campfire or in a friend’s kitchen. For years, Matt and his friends traveled between Missouri, Texas, Montana, and South Dakota, working construction and remodeling jobs to pay their way. As they traveled, they wrote songs and sang them-often just for each other.

A gifted songwriter, two of Matt’s songs were recently included on Jonathan Byrd and the Pickup Cowboy’s latest album release. His songs have been covered by many notable Folk/Americana artists, including Jonathan Byrd, Charlie Roth, Anthony DaCosta, Parker Brown, Radford Windham, the Steep Canyon Rangers and many others.

Eventually, 7 years with the Rochester, Minnesota-based group “Luke ‘n Bob Texas” gave Luke a sizable set list – including tunes from legends like Haggard, Jennings, Cash, and Jones, as well as his own songs dealing with drinkin’, lovin’, and inescapable wanderlust.

Event Details

Mixing up an unlikely concoction of vintage rock & roll and outlaw country, Cole Diamond is, depending on when you ask, either the stage name for singer/songwriter Ryan Otte or the collective handle for him and his band. Born in 1978 and raised in rural Minnesota, Otte moved to Minneapolis to attend College and has spent most of his musical life behind a drum kit playing and recording with many notable local bands. It wasn’t until recently that Otte decided to step out from behind the drums and take on the moniker of Cole Diamond. Drawing on influences that range from Waylon Jennings and Doug Sahm to Roky Erickson and CCR, Cole Diamond’s sound could best be categorized as Swamp Country.

02jun6:30 pm8:00 pmThe Rusty Wright BandWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Reared in a fertile musical environment that included spinning his auto plant worker dad’s vast collection of vintage blues records and playing guitar in his mother’s touring gospel group at 13, Rusty Wright knew from an early age what he was born to do.Decades of writing, recording, performing and touring have honed Wright’s skills to be one of the most respected guitarists/songwriters in the blues rock scene. Years of experience as a touring sideman and studio musician introduced him to a wide range of playing styles and techniques and he incorporates these into his incendiary guitar work and high energy live shows which lean heavily on musical improvisation.Formed in 2004, The Rusty Wright Band’s discography includes 5 original albums with his 2015 release “Wonder Man” achieving Top Ten status on the Billboard Blues Charts as well as being nominated for Album of the Year by Vintage Guitar Magazine alongside Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Sonny Landreth. 2013’s “This, That & The Other Thing”earned widespread radio airplay across North America, won Blues411’s Jimi Award for Contemporary Album of the Year and spent months at the top of Relix Magazine’s Jambands.com chart. “I have a lot of influences. I don’t just fit in one little space. My primary focus is Blues, but I’m not afraid to experiment –especially if taking the blues farther down the road means the music will appeal to younger generations as well. I’m not afraid to incorporate elements of other styles of music so long as the end product retains that feeling of passion. I never want to lose the passion and the joy and pain of music expression.” The band’s sound seamlessly assimilates everything from hints of early prog-rock to the intricate harmoniesand counter-rhythms of the Allman Brothers;the passion and flamboyance of SRV to the cool riffs and right-in-the-pocket grooves of Chicago blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin. It’s all blended with the forthright, honest nature of Wright’s plight-of-the-common-man lyrics which are partly the product of growing up in an auto industry town that’s been ravaged by circumstance and time. “The idea,” says Rusty, “is to craft great grooves that are really strong and fun to listen to and then pair them with lyrics and solos in a way that tells a story or expresses something you believe in deeply. If you don’t feel it deep inside, your audience sure won’t.” Originally from Flint, Michigan Wright now resides in central Florida but continues to tour the US, the EU, and Asia. You can find out more about him and the music at www.rustywrightband.comas well as Facebook, Twitterand Instagram.

20jun12:00 pm2:00 pmFeeding LeroyWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Feeding Leroy began as a duo, when Lee Martin and Sonja Bjordal started performing together in Park City, UT. They had a weekly gig through out one fateful summer and decided they had found what they were meant to do. The two took their show back home to Duluth, MN, on the shores of Lake Superior where they have been performing regularly ever since.

They took on a few more band members, recorded an album, had a couple name changes, but it has all led them to become… Feeding Leroy, living a simple life, playing tunes around the country and finding inspiration along the way.

Feeding Leroy came out of the collaboration of Sonja and Lee’s original songs, blending into a unique project, with their songwriting and vocal harmonies as the focus of this bands sound. It’s kind of a family affair now, with brother Luke stepping in on the harmonica and long time friend and bassist, Adam Staupe on the upright bass, both adding their vocal harmonies, creating somewhat of a gospel undertone that acts as it’s own instrument in the band.

You can find this foursome around the twin ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI, but they have also recently taken to the open road, bringing this up north sound to new cities across the nation. It’s country music at its core, it’s fun, its original, it’s Feeding Leroy.

30jun6:30 pm8:00 pmFlying BuffaloesWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Hot off of a performance-packed 2019 and the release of their debut LP, Loaded & Rollin’, Flying Buffaloes continue gaining momentum with their nostalgic, rock-leaning Alt-Country sound and high-energy live shows. Based in East Nashville, TN, the band has been steadily touring the US with headlining dates throughout the midwest as well as supporting renowned rock veterans, Drivin’ N Cryin,’ and acclaimed red dirt country artist, Wade Bowen across the south. Flying Buffaloes staked their claim as an Americana act on the rise at their 2019 AMERICANAFEST showcase performance. The positive reception of Loaded & Rollin’ in music press outlets like Pop Matters and Glide Magazine and mainstream radio play on stations including Nashville’s Lightning 100 and Chicago’s Big 95.5 bode well for the future of the band.

A deeply personal album, Loaded & Rollin’ explores the isolation and depression associated with immigration, the ups-and-downs of love, relationships, and the essence of what it means to be a working Nashville band. Recorded at Battle Tapes Studio in East Nashville by engineer/mixer/producer Jeremy Ferguson (Cage the Elephant/Steelism/Andrew Combs), Loaded & Rollin’ harkens back to classic rock and outlaw country albums of the 1970s. The production captures the band’s raw energy in-studio and aims to give the listener a taste of Flying Buffaloes’ captivating live performance. Don’t miss Flying Buffaloes on the road in 2020.

Event Details

For more than 15 years, SINGERMAN has been writing, producing and performing solo music, delivering an eclectic form of Americana, but never before has he been joined by a band. SINGERMAN and the Blaine-Singer Band is fronted by singer-songwriter Trent Singer and is rounded out by his family — Shaina Blaine (sister, keys), Lori Singer (mother, bass) and Curtis Singer (father, drums).

SINGERMAN was born in the midwest but grew up in the suburbs of Nashville, where his music career ultimately began. There isn’t a venue too big or too small for his music, as his raw performances can connect with any and every audience.

Influenced by the likes of artists such as Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Tom Waits, My Morning Jacket and Yo La Tengo among many others, SINGERMAN’s music reaches to the core of the soul, confronting subject matter of which every person can relate. He sings about family, the political landscape, adolescence, friendships and hardships, while his sound brings that subject matter into a charming light.

22jul6:30 pm8:00 pmAnnie and the Bang BangWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Fronted and founded by fight director, songwriter and guitarist Annie Enneking, Annie and the Bang Bang is a Minneapolis rock band. All multi-disciplined artists, they genre hop from dreamy folkpop to late sixties rock to swampy psychedelic blues, crafting musical gems that value energy, animal intelligence, poetry and mischief.

Annie believes songwriting is an act of spiritual archeology and so sifts through words to find bones of song, telling stories about being a person in a world full of people. She relies on the artistry, thick invention, and dig-right-down-into-it-ness of the Bang Bangs: the stacked chording and “just what the song wants” guitar of John Riedlinger, the lead-with-the-heart bass monster that is Kari Tweiten, and the heavy adventure and sharp-corner-turning drums of Mike Kittel.

The band has three albums out: their Minnesota Regional Arts Counsel’s “Next Step” funded self-titled debut, their sophomore effort Save Yourself, and the recently released still up?. They are currently mixing their fourth album, Loveland, which they developed during slumber parties and touring adventures (one of the things they value as a group is the feeling they all would’ve been friends when they were twelve). Their videos for “Explode With Happy, Man!” and “Rabbit Pelt” and “Crow River Drive” are doing pretty well on the Youtubes.

The band charted on the Local Current at #16 with their single “Explode With Happy, Man!” (also a top ten pick of local legend, Jim Walsh), and their video for “Funeral for Fun” was an official selection for the Independent Filmmaker’s Project MNTV programming showcase, which aired on Twin Cities Public Television and was installed in the Walker Art Museum’s film and video collection.

In addition to playing regularly in their hometown of Minneapolis, they’ve successfully toured Colorado four times, and are planning another foray deep into the mountains. They embark on smaller touring adventures throughout the Midwest with their baby trailer, which they pull with a tiny Prius. They have a band mascot named “Bun Bun,” a plastic light up rabbit, rescued from the trash the day before last year’s tour.

22aug2:00 pm4:00 pmAvey/Grouws BandWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Jeni Grouws met Chris Avey and Bryan West at a blues jam in the Quad Cities in 2015, and later that year The Avey Grouws Duo was formed. After throwing in a handful of well-received full band gigs in 2016, in 2017 the duo finally called up Bryan West to officially form the Avey/Grouws Band. Chris Avey, formerly of The Avey Brothers and former lead guitarist for blues icon Big Pete Pearson, has been called a “younger, more fiery Coco Montoya mixed with a dash of Tab Benoit”.

Avey and drummer Bryan West came in 3rd in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2009 as The Avey Brothers. The strength and grit of Avey’s guitar and vocals are beautifully matched by the sheer power and nuance of Grouws’ unmistakable voice. She’s been called “a choir full of angels on a runaway train!” Gary Eckhart of Blue Monday Monthly saw their first performance in 2017 called Grouws “a rising star” and said, “It was their first show and they are already ready for festivals!” And ready they were. AGB has wowed audiences across the country at places like Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, Prairie Dog Blues Fest, on tour in Florida, at Boogie, Blues N Brews in Arizona, North Liberty Blues Fest, and Smokin’ In Steele BBQ & Blues Fest. The release of their EP “Road to Memphis” in May of 2018, grabbed attention. Now Avey/Grouws Band is marking their spot on the music scene with the release of their debut full length album “The Devil May Care” in March 2020. And though their musicianship is stellar, there is simply something about how the band communicates with an audience.

An evening with the Avey/Grouws Band is playful, raucous and rooted in the moment. And you won’t want it to end!

Event Details

Sugar and the Mint has shared the bill with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Punch Brothers, Tommy Emmanuel, Jerry Douglas, I’m With Her, Steep Canyon Rangers, and the Sam Bush Band, while performing at the West’s best festivals: Telluride Bluegrass Festival (2018), Ogden Music Festival (2017, 2018) Pagosa Folk and Bluegrass Festival (2018), Rapidgrass Festival (2018), Pickin’ in the Pines Acoustic Music Festival (2017), and many more.

In addition to festival appearances, Sugar and the Mint draws large crowds at ticketed theater shows, with a history of Sold Out events. Performances highlight the band’s own work: innovative, original songs found on Sugar and the Mint’s albums, Just Past Midnight and Grape Flavored. The band’s musical repertoire spans many genres. Early on, the band put its own spin on songs from blues legend Robert Johnson, the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, folk music icons The Kingston Trio, and rock & roll’s Allman Brothers. Today, unique arrangements of 20th century favorites still make it to the set list for live shows.

24sep6:30 pm8:00 pmMike MunsonWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

Mike Munson has established himself as an adept slide guitar player and a member of the next generation of bluesmen to carry on a tradition some feared was dying out. With his fourth release, Rose Hill (2018) Munson traced the tradition to its roots, recording at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia, MN on the Blue Front Record label.

Throughout his career Munson has continually sought out teachers and mentors, most significantly, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, the renowned owner of the oldest juke joint in North America, the Blue Front Cafe. Holmes is one of the last in a musical lineage referred to as the Bentonia Bluesmen who have made a name for the haunting and ethereal minor tunings used in this region of the state. The style and its purveyors have long captured the attention of Munson who has made many pilgrimages to the home state of the myriad of players who have influenced him, including Fred McDowell, Jack Owens and Jessie Mae Hemphill.

Munson has thrived under the mentorship of Holmes, building a body of work that blends his Midwestern roots with his Mississippi travels. From sad and somber slow tunes to swampy, caterwauling stompers, his music is a master class in creative blues composition and performance, often dark and heavy, yet lyrically compelling and altogether danceable. He never loses sight of his artform or the music’s roots while finding a voice that is distinctively his own.

Event Details

The Violet Nines:
Andy Elmeer // Ben Cline // Veronica Fritsch // Nick Eagon // O’SAY

The Violet Nines are a vibrant outfit with alternative rock sounds influenced by funk, pop and R&B.

Band members Nick and Veronica met at a party where they each felt like “that person alone in the corner.” Fortunately, social discomfort turned serendipitous when a conversation sparked and a shared love of music was discovered. A couple weeks later, after Nick’s former band needed a singer unexpectedly, The V9s were born.

That story sums The Violet Nines up well – a group of party pariahs who share a deep-seated belief in the power of music and its ability to bring us together.

14nov2:00 pm4:00 pmJoyann ParkerWhite Wall Sessions Season 8

Event Details

With early roots in the church and a solid foundation of musical education, Joyann Parker found her authentic voice later in life and created her own blend of roots music that combines soul, R&B, gospel, jazz and traditional blues styles. Parker has been a steadily rising star on the Minneapolis music scene, and with the release of her critically-acclaimed solo debut record, “Hard To Love,” she is now bringing her full range of talent as an accomplished singer, pianist, guitarist and songwriter to national and international stages.

Joyann is a 2018 Blues Blast Magazine Award Nominee and Heritage Guitars artist. She has also represented Minnesota at the 2015 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and won Best Self Produced CD from the Minnesota Blues Society.

“Joyann Parker presents a package of originals and serves notice that she’s a blues performer to the bone. Bravely risking emotional exposure, this Minneapolis- based singer and multi-instrumentalist shows a penchant for depicting a unique response to the ups and downs of life. The album sweeps through well-titled numbers like “Envy,” “Evil Hearted,” and “Take My Heart And Run.” Parker and company work styles ranging from Chuck Berry and bluesy funk to French Quarter parades and Memphis soul approximations.” (Frank-John Hadley/DownBeat Magazine)
Hard To Love” is a colorful musical tapestry woven by a consummate artist out of the warp and wool of jazz, soul and blues. Parker’s passionate vocals deliver what might be one of the best albums of the year so far.” (Henry L. Carrigan/Living Blues Magazine)
